We speed up innovation

What had been considered impossible by the industry, is now reality: Mass-fabrication of high-precision products and components for industrial applications made by electroforming.

The private company Electric Forming Japan (EFJ) realises micro-through-holes in metal substrate with diameters down to 30µm, with an aspect ratio of 40 and higher. Pitch, angle, and number of holes can be varied, so that one potential application lies in the fabrication of next-generation nozzles for fuel injectors.

Larger holes can have even higher aspect ratios, e.g. 126µm diameter holes can be produced with aspect ratios of more than 100, while maintaining excellent surface quality inside (Ra 0.0127µm) without further treatment. Given these specifications, the technology has lead to a new generation of ferrules and connectors for optical fibres:

EFJ presents high-end metal ferrules as well as ready-to-use connector systems made of metal or precision-molded plastic. These connector systems can easily and safely connect up to 16 light guides each. It saves manufacturing time as well as space, for the number of connectors can be significantly reduced. Due to a sophisticated yet simple mechanism, handling is easy and mechanically suitable for any heavy duty application, such as automotive, aerospace or others, where safe data transmission is indispensable.

Thanks to the high-precision property of the ferrules (pitch tolerance of 500nm), signal attenuation at the connector is low and makes the connectors even suitable for long-distance data transmission applications, significantly improving the efficiency by reducing the number of repeater units etc.
